The Centre for Advanced Middle Eastern Studies (CMES) at Lund University is dedicated to producing world-class, interdisciplinary research on the Middle East. Its mission goes beyond academia — CMES actively fosters collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders, including the business sector, government institutions, NGOs, and civil society organizations. By investing in innovative communication strategies and knowledge-sharing platforms, CMES ensures that its research is not only academically rigorous but also accessible and relevant to those working in or with the region.
A significant portion of the research conducted at CMES falls under the Strategic Research Area (SRA) “The Middle East in the Contemporary World” (MECW), which receives funding from the Swedish Research Council. MECW was created through financial support from the Swedish Government as part of its Strategic Research Area Initiative. Middle East scholarship at Lund University has been acknowledged by the Swedish Higher Education as being “of the highest international quality” and contributing “towards dealing with important societal challenges.”
